What to Pack for Ziyaraat: The Complete Packing List for Iran & Iraq

13 August 2026What to Pack for Ziyaraat: The Complete Packing List for Iran & Iraq
Packing for Ziyaraat is different from packing for a holiday. Your days revolve around the shrines, long walks, and prayer — so every item in your bag should earn its place. This list is built for pilgrims traveling from Pakistan to Iran and Iraq, in any season. DOCUMENTS FIRST Your passport, visa, tickets and hotel confirmations are the journey. Carry printed copies in a separate bag from the originals, keep digital copies on your phone, and share a set with a family member at home. Add your group leader's contact card and your hotel's name and address written down — not just saved in your phone. CLOTHING Pack modest, comfortable clothing you can pray and walk in. For most of the year, light breathable layers work best, with a warm layer for evenings — Karbala and Mashhad can be genuinely cold in winter and very hot in summer. Women should bring comfortable abayas or chadors suitable for shrine entry requirements. A small shoulder bag keeps hands free in crowds. FOOTWEAR This is the most underestimated item on the list. You will walk for hours, often on marble and stone. Bring well-broken-in, comfortable sandals or walking shoes — never brand-new footwear. Add a light pair of slip-on sandals for shrine visits where shoes are left outside, plus a small bag to carry them in. HEALTH AND PERSONAL CARE Carry regular medications in original packaging with a copy of your prescription. Add a compact first-aid kit: pain relief, rehydration salts, blister plasters, and any personal essentials. Unscented options are preferred in pilgrimage settings. Sunscreen and a hat or umbrella are worthwhile in warmer months. TECH AND MONEY A universal power adapter, a power bank for long days out, and a phone set up with a local or roaming SIM will cover most needs. Carry some local currency for small purchases alongside your card, and keep valuables minimal and close to the body in crowded areas. SPIRITUAL ESSENTIALS A pocket Quran or duas book, a tasbeeh, a light prayer mat, and a small notebook for the ziyarat duas you want to read at each shrine. Many pilgrims also carry a list of names of family and friends who asked to be remembered — a beautiful practice that costs nothing in weight. WHAT TO LEAVE AT HOME Expensive jewelry, excess electronics, heavy books, and anything you would be sad to lose in a crowd. Pack light: a medium suitcase or large backpack is enough for most one-to-two-week Ziyaraat journeys, and you will thank yourself at every transfer. PLAN THE REST WITH BSH Packing is the one part of Ziyaraat only you can do — BSH Travel & Tours handles everything else: visa assistance, airline tickets, hotels near the holy sites, ground transportation and monthly Qafila group departures.
